A Sufi in a Swimming Pool

I float in awareness
Air fills the breath and it
rises, drifts

Like a Sufi in a swimming pool

Could that be me?
A Sufi in a swimming pool?

The pool is life
And within everything, the Divine
But I can’t describe
Because I’m looking around
And still trying to swim

And how can I describe?

When I only get a snatch
A glimmer, a glance
Of something I feel
But can’t understand
And I swim all the strokes
And bob my head
And gasp for breath

And stop,
Reset.

I float

To see what I see
Even the snatch of Light
Is enough for me

And I’ll swim my dog paddle
The best I know how
And I’ll float when I can

As my life’s seeking
Emerges from the tide
So from this moment forth,

I’ll cannonball into life
And make the teachers proud
That if I made a splash

I would be earning my time
To float on my back
And seek the Divine,
In that vast open sky.
